There's No Print In Our Liberty
As you can imagine, designing a bauble of Liberty London was a truly exciting opportunity - and while I would be up against many fellow creatives throughout their Open Call competition, the challenge was one I was certainly not going to ignore. Liberty is famed for its artistic style of design and sense of cultural exploration. For this reason, I knew the Liberty ornament needed to have something iconic; something which represented Liberty as the pioneering treasure hunting retailer it is, beyond simply a historic Tudor beamed landmark.
Beginning the design was as much daunting as it was easy. A contradiction, perhaps, yet the building itself is so dramatic, it made my starting point seemingly simplistic, yet translating this into a design which could be feasibly painted into a 3D object while doing justice to the landmark facade, made the task daunting. I chose to design the artwork blooming with Spring flowers, a season when Liberty open their doors and line the entrance with buckets of fresh flowers, a trademark to the Spring Summer Liberty display.
The addition of the elephant was a stylised twist which I endeavour to add to all our hand painted gifts. The elephant was placed walking past the doors of the iconic shop, with a purple Liberty bag hanging on its majestic trunk - a symbolic nod to the global treasures which stock the Liberty store.
